Planning your first trip to the spa? Sit back and relax, this article will take you through the basics on what you are in for when looking into a Mississauga day spa. There are many individuals who get nervous when going to the spa for the first time because they are unsure of what to expect, but remember you are there to relax not stress!

Some tips prior to your visit would be to call and ask for a tour. Not every spa will be able to provide you with one, but it doesn’t hurt to ask and get acquainted with the venue. When you book your appointment – ask questions. Any decent business will welcome enquiries if it makes you more at ease, and don’t hesitate to ask about specific treatments. Last but not least, decide beforehand whether you are more comfortable with a male or female professional – everyone has their preferences. You should drink plenty of water before and after your services to get the most of skin treatments. Try to avoid eating shortly before arriving to avoid the problems that can come with digestion.

When you arrive at the spa you have some extra options available to you depending on how much time you have. Remember to let the staff know that it is your first time when you check in – they will be eager to assist you. If you arrive early, you have the benefit of enjoying soothing beverages to get you relaxed and ready for your treatments.

You may be given a locker to store your stuff and a robe with slippers for your stay. Relax in the waiting room a few minutes before your treatment and clear your mind. Cell phones are definitely a no-no in any spa.

If you are getting a massage for the first time, you may not know what to expect or wear. Your massage therapist will explain how to properly get on the table and leave the room for your privacy. Most people prefer to remove all their clothes, but you can leave on your underpants if that makes you more comfortable.  The registered massage therapist will knock before entering and you will begin your journey to relaxation. When your massage is complete your massage therapist will exit so that you can put you clothing back on.

With the majority of body treatments and massages requiring you to remove your clothes – you are never left exposed. You are consistently in your provided robe or draped in sheets. Remember to relax, take deep breaths and allow your tense muscles to loosen and enjoy. Always remember that you can communicate your feedback to your massage therapist. If there is too much pressure or they are doing a wonderful job, speak up! You can chose to start a dialogue with the therapist or keep quiet – it is completely up to you.  As with any new adventure, remember to be open to the experience. Registered massage therapist training teaches them all the muscles and pressure points in the body, but they still need your input to give you the best treatment.

It is always possible to extend the experience of the spa at home. Don’t feel pressured to purchase the in house products offered, but remember that they are the products that have been used on you during your stay. It is important to get into a good skin care routine at home so that your future trips to the spa revolve around feeling and looking even better than you already do. Lastly, spa’s are for relaxation and rejuvenation – don’t be scared. Shed off your accumulated stress and treat yourself to a new experience.
